about the project: As a student at Chapman University, I have had the privilege of living at walking distance from the iconic Old Town Orange (Orange, CA) for the past four years. As a freshman in college, I got a part-time job scooping ice-cream and making milkshakes at the historical restaurant Watson's Soda Fountain and Cafe. The restaurant sadly closed down shortly after I quit working there, which left me and many others heartbroken, as it was a beautiful and nostalgic staple of the town. I decided to take the original menu and redesign / rebrand it. Watson's was originally a drugstore in the late 1800's and was later in the 50's turned into a classic American diner. Given its history, I thought it would be appropriate to combine the graphic aesthetic of the Victorian Era with colors and elements that were popular in the 1950's. With that goal in mind, I created this menu which still seems modern and appropriate for a restaurant in 2025.
